Gradual absorption: trust, predictability and subspace

How predictability, trust, and relational framework change the organization of attention.

In the ar­ti­cle What We Mean When We Talk About Sub­space, we de­scribed sub­space as a com­mu­ni­ty la­bel for a group of re­lat­ed, though not en­tire­ly iden­ti­cal, ex­pe­ri­ences. A sim­i­lar­ly ex­pe­ri­enced state can arise through dif­fer­ent path­ways, and it may not be pos­si­ble to re­li­ably de­ter­mine what is pre­cise­ly tak­ing place based sole­ly on ex­ter­nal man­i­fes­ta­tions.

One of these pos­si­ble path­ways is grad­ual ab­sorp­tion, which can be sup­port­ed by the ex­pe­ri­ence of trust, pre­dictabil­i­ty, and a re­spect­ful frame­work.

In such a sit­u­a­tion, a per­son does not nec­es­sar­i­ly “shut down” or stop per­ceiv­ing what is hap­pen­ing. How­ev­er, the way they dis­trib­ute their at­ten­tion can grad­u­al­ly shift. When it is no longer nec­es­sary to de­vote so much at­ten­tion to plan­ning, con­trol, and the con­stant eval­u­a­tion of the sit­u­a­tion, bod­i­ly sen­sa­tions, emo­tions, con­tact with an­oth­er per­son, and the present mo­ment it­self can gain more space.

This is nei­ther a com­plete loss of con­trol nor a han­dover of one’s au­ton­o­my to an­oth­er. It is more ac­cu­rate to speak of a change in the or­ga­ni­za­tion of at­ten­tion and reg­u­la­tion.

Yet even this path­way does not rep­re­sent a sin­gle, nar­row­ly de­fined neu­ro­bi­o­log­i­cal mech­a­nism. It is a the­o­ret­i­cal frame­work that con­nects more gen­er­al in­sights on at­ten­tion, au­to­nom­ic reg­u­la­tion, in­te­ro­cep­tion, so­cial bond­ing, and deep ab­sorp­tion, ap­ply­ing them to the ex­pe­ri­ences that peo­ple re­fer to as sub­space.

Safety as a Condition for Openness

In an in­ten­sive sit­u­a­tion, the ner­vous sys­tem does not re­act sole­ly to the strength of in­di­vid­ual stim­uli. It also de­pends on what those stim­uli mean to the in­di­vid­ual. It con­tin­u­ous­ly process­es their bi­o­log­i­cal, re­la­tion­al, and sit­u­a­tion­al sig­nif­i­cance. It eval­u­ates whether de­fen­sive alert­ness needs to be in­creased, whether it is pos­si­ble to re­main open to the ex­pe­ri­ence, and what ac­tion op­tions are avail­able at any giv­en mo­ment.

Stim­uli can car­ry an en­tire­ly dif­fer­ent mean­ing when a sit­u­a­tion is un­pre­dictable com­pared to when it un­folds with­in a vol­un­tary and com­pre­hen­si­ble frame­work.

A large part of this eval­u­a­tion takes place with­out con­scious de­ci­sion-mak­ing. The ner­vous sys­tem re­acts to the tone and rhythm of the voice, the qual­i­ty of touch, changes in move­ment, fa­cial ex­pres­sions, or the pre­dictabil­i­ty of the oth­er per­son’s re­ac­tions. Some­thing much sim­pler also car­ries weight: whether what was agreed upon ac­tu­al­ly holds true.

In poly­va­gal the­o­ry, the term neu­ro­cep­tion is used for the non-con­scious dis­tinc­tion be­tween safe­ty and threat. While use­ful as an il­lus­tra­tive frame­work, it should not be un­der­stood as a de­fin­i­tive­ly proven, in­de­pen­dent neu­ro­bi­o­log­i­cal mech­a­nism. More broad­ly, we can say that the brain and the au­to­nom­ic ner­vous sys­tem con­tin­u­ous­ly eval­u­ate the bi­o­log­i­cal and be­hav­ioral sig­nif­i­cance of a sit­u­a­tion with­out most of this process en­ter­ing con­scious thought.

Past ex­pe­ri­ence also en­ters into this eval­u­a­tion. As we dis­cussed in the ar­ti­cle The Pre­dic­tive Brain, we do not ex­pe­ri­ence any sit­u­a­tion as en­tire­ly new. The brain works with ex­pec­ta­tions formed from what has hap­pened be­fore.

A cer­tain touch, tone of voice, re­stric­tion of move­ment, or re­ac­tion from an­oth­er per­son is there­fore not mere­ly a present stim­u­lus. It also car­ries a learned ex­pec­ta­tion of what will like­ly hap­pen next.

If it is re­peat­ed­ly con­firmed that the en­vi­ron­ment is suf­fi­cient­ly pre­dictable, bound­aries hold real mean­ing, and the part­ner re­acts in a way that aligns with the agree­ment, a per­son does not need to con­scious­ly mon­i­tor every sin­gle mo­ment.

This does not mean the ner­vous sys­tem stops mon­i­tor­ing the sit­u­a­tion. How­ev­er, a por­tion of that pro­cess­ing does not need to con­stant­ly en­ter con­scious thought. Con­se­quent­ly, the per­son does not have to ac­tive­ly pon­der at every mo­ment what will fol­low, what each in­di­vid­ual stim­u­lus means, or whether it is nec­es­sary to in­ter­vene im­me­di­ate­ly.

They do not have to keep ask­ing them­selves: What comes next? Is this still okay? What does this change mean?

Part of this mon­i­tor­ing can re­cede into the back­ground. At­ten­tion is then grant­ed more space for the ex­pe­ri­ence it­self.

Control Can Enable Its Own Release

Sur­ren­der some­times feels like the op­po­site of con­trol. In re­al­i­ty, the two may not have such a sim­ple op­po­si­tion. The abil­i­ty to re­lease con­scious di­rec­tion can be sup­port­ed pre­cise­ly by the ex­pe­ri­ence that a per­son re­tains real in­flu­ence over the course of the sit­u­a­tion.

At the be­gin­ning of an in­ten­sive ex­pe­ri­ence, con­scious con­trol ful­fills an im­por­tant pro­tec­tive func­tion. The per­son eval­u­ates whether they un­der­stand the sit­u­a­tion, whether they are en­ter­ing into it vol­un­tar­i­ly, whether it aligns with pri­or agree­ments, and whether the oth­er per­son is re­spond­ing to their bound­aries and changes in state. This phase is not an ob­sta­cle to a deep ex­pe­ri­ence; rather, it can cre­ate the con­di­tions un­der which every mo­ment does not lat­er need to be man­aged through ac­tive plan­ning and analy­sis.

If the ner­vous sys­tem re­peat­ed­ly ac­quires the ex­pe­ri­ence that the en­vi­ron­ment is pre­dictable and the oth­er per­son re­sponds re­li­ably, a por­tion of con­scious mon­i­tor­ing can re­cede. This does not mean con­trol is hand­ed over to an­oth­er per­son. In­stead, the way con­trol is ex­er­cised changes: less through con­stant con­scious over­sight and more through trust in a frame­work that has al­ready proven its sta­bil­i­ty.

Deep­er sur­ren­der can thus be sup­port­ed by the aware­ness that it is pos­si­ble to in­flu­ence, mod­i­fy, or ter­mi­nate the process. How­ev­er, this does not mean that with­in the al­tered state, this ca­pa­bil­i­ty re­mains equal­ly eas­i­ly ac­ces­si­ble to con­scious­ness or com­mu­ni­ca­tion at every sin­gle mo­ment. The ca­pac­i­ty to act and the abil­i­ty to im­me­di­ate­ly uti­lize that ca­pac­i­ty are not al­ways the same thing.

For this very rea­son, safe ab­sorp­tion can­not be de­fined mere­ly by the fact that a per­son “has con­trol.” What is more es­sen­tial is whether their ca­pac­i­ty to re­spond shifts flex­i­bly, whether the sit­u­a­tion re­mains in­flu­ence­able, and whether the es­tab­lished frame­work ac­counts for the pos­si­bil­i­ty that com­mu­ni­ca­tion, ori­en­ta­tion, or de­ci­sion-mak­ing speed may be al­tered dur­ing an in­ten­sive state.

Relationship as a Part of Regulation

The hu­man ner­vous sys­tem is not a closed sys­tem op­er­at­ing in­de­pen­dent­ly of oth­er peo­ple. From the be­gin­ning, it de­vel­ops with­in a so­cial en­vi­ron­ment and con­tin­u­ous­ly re­acts to the sig­nals of oth­ers.

The pres­ence of a part­ner is there­fore not mere­ly a psy­cho­log­i­cal back­drop to the ex­pe­ri­ence. The tone of voice, rhythm of move­ment, touch, fa­cial ex­pres­sion, style of re­ac­tion, and pre­dictabil­i­ty of be­hav­ior rep­re­sent in­for­ma­tion that can in­flu­ence at­ten­tion, au­to­nom­ic reg­u­la­tion, and the in­ter­pre­ta­tion of bod­i­ly sig­nals.

The ex­act same pres­sure or re­stric­tion of move­ment does not nec­es­sar­i­ly pro­duce the ex­act same ex­pe­ri­ence. It de­pends on who is gen­er­at­ing the stim­u­lus, what re­la­tion­ship the per­son has to them, what pre­ced­ed the sit­u­a­tion, and what they ex­pect to fol­low. With­in a safe re­la­tion­al en­vi­ron­ment, we do not eval­u­ate mere­ly the me­chan­i­cal in­ten­si­ty of a stim­u­lus, but also who is cre­at­ing it, in what con­text it aris­es, and what typ­i­cal­ly fol­lows. There­fore, the same pres­sure, re­stric­tion, or shift in po­si­tion can car­ry a fun­da­men­tal­ly dif­fer­ent mean­ing in a sit­u­a­tion of un­cer­tain­ty ver­sus a sit­u­a­tion that is vol­un­tary, pre­dictable, and re­la­tion­al­ly an­chored.

This is pre­cise­ly where trust be­comes some­thing more than a con­scious de­ci­sion.

In the grad­ual tran­si­tion to­ward ab­sorp­tion, what may be sig­nif­i­cant is the re­peat­ed con­fir­ma­tion that a per­son can re­main open to ex­pe­ri­ence while si­mul­ta­ne­ous­ly main­tain­ing a con­nec­tion to their own body, the sit­u­a­tion, and the oth­er per­son. They are not mere­ly plung­ing into a spe­cif­ic type of stim­u­la­tion; they are en­ter­ing a re­la­tion­al process in which their ner­vous sys­tem con­tin­u­ous­ly eval­u­ates whether pre­vi­ous ex­pec­ta­tions of safe­ty re­main valid.

Co-reg­u­la­tion does not mean that one per­son di­rect­ly con­trols the ner­vous sys­tem of an­oth­er. As we em­pha­sized in the ar­ti­cle The Evo­lu­tion­ary Sig­nif­i­cance of Al­tered States of Con­scious­ness, it is a con­tin­u­ous ex­change of sig­nals based on which both par­tic­i­pants can ad­just their own state and be­hav­ior.

Predictability Does Not Mean Knowing What Comes Next

An un­pre­dictable en­vi­ron­ment re­quires in­creased en­gage­ment of mon­i­tor­ing mech­a­nisms. The or­gan­ism must be pre­pared to re­act to changes it does not un­der­stand and whose sig­nif­i­cance it can­not gauge. In a sit­u­a­tion where the ba­sic rules are clear and the oth­er per­son’s re­ac­tions are read­able over the long term, the ne­ces­si­ty for this mon­i­tor­ing can be low­er.

At the same time, pre­dictabil­i­ty does not mean a per­son knows every up­com­ing move­ment or stim­u­lus. An in­ten­sive ex­pe­ri­ence can con­tain sur­pris­es, vari­abil­i­ty, and a high de­gree of sen­so­ry ac­ti­va­tion. What re­mains sta­ble, how­ev­er, is the foun­da­tion­al re­la­tion­al and eth­i­cal frame­work: agree­ments hold, bound­aries car­ry real mean­ing, changes in state in­flu­ence the sub­se­quent flow, and the oth­er per­son’s be­hav­ior is not ar­bi­trary. It is pre­cise­ly this deep­er form of pre­dictabil­i­ty that can al­low in­di­vid­ual mo­ments to re­main un­pre­dictable.

When stim­uli cre­ate a com­pre­hen­si­ble pro­gres­sion, at­ten­tion can grad­u­al­ly stop fo­cus­ing on their an­a­lyt­i­cal eval­u­a­tion and shift more to­ward im­me­di­ate ex­pe­ri­ence.

Neurochemistry Is Not a Simple Explanation

When ex­plain­ing trust and re­la­tion­al close­ness, oxy­tocin is fre­quent­ly men­tioned—some­times in­ac­cu­rate­ly re­ferred to as the “trust hor­mone.” Oxy­tocin on its own does not cre­ate a sense of safe­ty and does not in­duce trust re­gard­less of cir­cum­stances.

It is one of the neu­ro­mod­u­la­tors in­volved in pro­cess­ing so­cial in­for­ma­tion, and its ef­fects de­pend on con­text, pri­or ex­pe­ri­ence, the re­la­tion­ship be­tween in­di­vid­u­als, and oth­er bi­o­log­i­cal process­es.

While it can in­crease the sig­nif­i­cance of cer­tain so­cial sig­nals, it does not au­to­mat­i­cal­ly sig­nal to the ner­vous sys­tem that an­oth­er per­son is safe.

Sim­i­lar­ly, dopamine can­not be re­duced to a sim­ple “re­ward hor­mone.” The dopamin­er­gic sys­tem is in­volved in mo­ti­va­tion, learn­ing, ex­pec­ta­tion, and the la­bel­ing of stim­uli that the or­gan­ism eval­u­ates as sig­nif­i­cant. It can in­flu­ence which as­pects of the ex­pe­ri­ence re­ceive at­ten­tion and how strong­ly the con­nec­tions be­tween the sit­u­a­tion, bod­i­ly state, and out­come will shape fu­ture ex­pec­ta­tions.

Grad­ual ab­sorp­tion there­fore like­ly does not arise from the ac­tion of a sin­gle sub­stance or a sin­gle ner­vous sys­tem in iso­la­tion. If bi­o­log­i­cal process­es par­tic­i­pate, it in­volves an in­ter­play of at­ten­tion, au­to­nom­ic reg­u­la­tion, bod­i­ly sen­sa­tions, emo­tions, so­cial learn­ing, and a range of neu­ro­chem­i­cal process­es.

Ex­plain­ing sub­space sole­ly through oxy­tocin, dopamine, or en­dor­phins would mean re­duc­ing a com­plex state to a mech­a­nism for which we lack suf­fi­cient back­ing.

From Situation Monitoring to Absorption

In or­di­nary func­tion­ing, at­ten­tion is con­stant­ly di­vid­ed be­tween the ex­ter­nal en­vi­ron­ment, plan­ning, the eval­u­a­tion of one’s own ac­tions, bod­i­ly sig­nals, and so­cial in­for­ma­tion.

Dur­ing deep ab­sorp­tion, this ra­tio can shift. Bod­i­ly sen­sa­tions, emo­tions, the rhythm of the ex­pe­ri­ence, and con­tact with an­oth­er per­son ac­quire greater sig­nif­i­cance, while an­a­lyt­i­cal think­ing may re­cede.

A per­son may have the sub­jec­tive feel­ing of be­ing guid­ed or that the ex­pe­ri­ence is un­fold­ing al­most on its own. Nev­er­the­less, they re­main an ac­tive par­tic­i­pant in the re­la­tion­al process. Their body and ner­vous sys­tem con­tin­ue to re­act to stim­uli, en­vi­ron­men­tal changes, and the be­hav­ior of the oth­er per­son, even if a por­tion of these re­ac­tions does not en­ter con­scious­ness as a ver­bal­ly for­mu­lat­ed de­ci­sion.

Sim­i­lar shifts can also be ob­served in oth­er states of deep con­cen­tra­tion, such as flow, med­i­ta­tion, in­tense move­ment, or ab­sorp­tion in artis­tic ac­tiv­i­ty. How­ev­er, as we em­pha­sized in the ar­ti­cle What We Mean When We Talk About Sub­space, sub­space can­not be sim­ply equat­ed with any of these states. In a BDSM con­text, spe­cif­ic mean­ings of phys­i­cal re­stric­tion, dom­i­nance and sub­mis­sion, trust, vul­ner­a­bil­i­ty, and the re­la­tion­al trans­fer of ini­tia­tive are added to ab­sorp­tion.

When the Internal Commentary Falls Quiet

One of the changes peo­ple de­scribe dur­ing deep ab­sorp­tion is the re­ces­sion of the usu­al in­ter­nal com­men­tary. Think­ing that con­tin­u­ous­ly eval­u­ates what is hap­pen­ing, plans for the fu­ture, or ad­dress­es how one ap­pears to oth­ers can lose its cus­tom­ary im­por­tance.

Au­to­bi­o­graph­i­cal and self-ref­er­en­tial think­ing is sup­port­ed, among oth­er things, by a net­work of brain re­gions known as the De­fault Mode Net­work. This net­work is nei­ther the “cen­ter of the ego” nor a mere source of dis­tract­ing thoughts. It is in­volved in mem­o­ry, fu­ture sim­u­la­tion, so­cial rea­son­ing, and the con­tex­tu­al­iza­tion of ex­pe­ri­ences with­in a per­son­al nar­ra­tive.

Re­search on med­i­ta­tion and oth­er forms of deep con­cen­tra­tion shows that the ac­tiv­i­ty and func­tion­al con­nec­tiv­i­ty of this net­work can change in cer­tain states. How­ev­er, di­rect data re­gard­ing its func­tion­ing dur­ing sub­space is lack­ing. Con­se­quent­ly, it can only be pre­sumed that changes in the or­ga­ni­za­tion of self-ref­er­en­tial pro­cess­ing may con­tribute to the sub­jec­tive re­treat of the in­ter­nal com­men­tary.

At­ten­tion can then shift away from ques­tions such as “how do I look in this,” “what does this mean about me,” or “what comes next” to­ward the im­me­di­ate ex­pe­ri­ence of the body, breath, touch, and re­la­tion­al con­tact.

This shift does not nec­es­sar­i­ly rep­re­sent a loss of ra­tio­nal­i­ty or con­tact with the sit­u­a­tion. How­ev­er, it can­not be au­to­mat­i­cal­ly as­sumed that the abil­i­ty to eval­u­ate all changes and com­mu­ni­cate bound­aries re­mains ful­ly ac­ces­si­ble at every mo­ment. Al­tered at­ten­tion can si­mul­ta­ne­ous­ly bring deep­er pres­ence along­side lim­i­ta­tions on cer­tain forms of con­scious pro­cess­ing.

The Body as a Primary Source of Information

In­te­ro­cep­tion refers to the set of process­es through which the ner­vous sys­tem de­tects, in­te­grates, and in­ter­prets in­for­ma­tion about the in­ter­nal state of the or­gan­ism. Dur­ing ab­sorp­tion, bod­i­ly sig­nals can ac­quire greater sig­nif­i­cance with­in con­scious ex­pe­ri­ence.

This does not nec­es­sar­i­ly mean they are ob­jec­tive­ly stronger than at oth­er times; rather, their rel­a­tive weight may change.

When at­ten­tion is less oc­cu­pied with mon­i­tor­ing the sur­round­ings, plan­ning, and con­tin­u­ous self-eval­u­a­tion, the breath, heart rhythm, pres­sure, tem­per­a­ture, mus­cle ten­sion, pain, or changes in pos­ture can emerge more promi­nent­ly to the fore­front.

Sub­jec­tive ex­pe­ri­ence can then or­ga­nize it­self less through ver­bal thought and more through bod­i­ly qual­i­ties. A per­son may per­ceive weight, flow, warmth, con­stric­tion, ex­pan­sion, rhythm, or changes in the bound­aries of their own body more dis­tinct­ly.

How­ev­er, height­ened at­ten­tion to the body does not au­to­mat­i­cal­ly mean more ac­cu­rate in­ter­pre­ta­tion of all bod­i­ly sig­nals. As we not­ed in the ar­ti­cle In­te­ro­cep­tion: How the Body Speaks to the Brain, in­tense fo­cus can ac­cen­tu­ate cer­tain sen­sa­tions while damp­en­ing oth­ers. A per­son may deeply per­ceive a spe­cif­ic type of pres­sure or emo­tion while si­mul­ta­ne­ous­ly over­look­ing fa­tigue, ac­cu­mu­lat­ing over­load, or a prob­lem that fails to en­ter the cur­rent fo­cal point of at­ten­tion.

For this very rea­son, a deep feel­ing of con­nec­tion with the body can­not be mis­tak­en for a guar­an­tee of phys­i­o­log­i­cal safe­ty.

The Paradox of Safe Activation

In the ar­ti­cle The Au­to­nom­ic Ner­vous Sys­tem, we de­scribed that sym­pa­thet­ic ac­ti­va­tion in and of it­self is not a sign of threat. An ac­cel­er­at­ed heart rate, changes in breath­ing, mus­cle ten­sion, and high emo­tion­al in­ten­si­ty can ap­pear dur­ing fear, but also dur­ing ex­cite­ment, ath­let­ic per­for­mance, cre­ativ­i­ty, sex­u­al ex­pe­ri­ence, or deep con­cen­tra­tion.

With­in the con­text of the path­way through safe­ty, high phys­i­o­log­i­cal ac­ti­va­tion can oc­cur si­mul­ta­ne­ous­ly with pre­served reg­u­la­to­ry ca­pac­i­ty. So­cial sig­nals, pre­dictabil­i­ty, the abil­i­ty to in­flu­ence the course of events, and pri­or ex­pe­ri­ence with the oth­er per­son can in­flu­ence whether the or­gan­ism in­ter­prets bod­i­ly ac­ti­va­tion as a man­age­able part of the ex­pe­ri­ence or as a sign of threat.

This is not a mat­ter of the ac­tion of a sin­gle bi­o­log­i­cal “brake”. As we em­pha­sized in the ar­ti­cle The Au­to­nom­ic Ner­vous Sys­tem, the re­sult­ing state aris­es from the co­or­di­na­tion of mul­ti­ple au­to­nom­ic, cen­tral, so­mat­ic, and re­la­tion­al process­es. Fur­ther­more, in­di­vid­ual in­di­ca­tors of au­to­nom­ic ac­tiv­i­ty do not nec­es­sar­i­ly change in the same di­rec­tion, and the state can­not be sim­ply de­scribed as si­mul­ta­ne­ous high sym­pa­thet­ic and parasym­pa­thet­ic ac­ti­va­tion.

At the same time, the dif­fer­ence be­tween ab­sorp­tion and over­load does not rest sole­ly on the in­ter­pre­ta­tion of the same bod­i­ly sig­nal. It aris­es in the in­ter­play of re­la­tion­al and sit­u­a­tion­al con­text, ex­pec­ta­tions, the in­ten­si­ty and du­ra­tion of stim­uli, cur­rent bod­i­ly state, fa­tigue, health cir­cum­stances, and the or­gan­ism’s ca­pac­i­ty to process the ex­pe­ri­ence con­tin­u­ous­ly.

There­fore, even a very safe re­la­tion­al frame­work can­not in­def­i­nite­ly com­pen­sate for ac­tu­al phys­i­o­log­i­cal load.

Why This Pathway Is Not Equally Accessible to Everyone

Grad­ual ab­sorp­tion can­not be un­der­stood as a guar­an­teed pro­ce­dure that will yield a pre­dictable re­sult once a few con­di­tions are met. Peo­ple dif­fer in how quick­ly and un­der what cir­cum­stances their ner­vous sys­tem can re­duce the need for con­scious mon­i­tor­ing.

Pre­vi­ous re­la­tion­al and bod­i­ly ex­pe­ri­ences can play a sig­nif­i­cant role. If the ner­vous sys­tem has re­peat­ed­ly learned in the past that close­ness, re­stric­tion, or vul­ner­a­bil­i­ty are linked to un­pre­dictabil­i­ty or loss of in­flu­ence, re­leas­ing con­scious con­trol may be more dif­fi­cult—even in a sit­u­a­tion that, based on avail­able in­for­ma­tion, is re­spect­ful, pre­dictable, and rea­son­ably safe.

This prin­ci­ple builds upon the ar­ti­cles The Pre­dic­tive Brain and In­te­ro­cep­tion: How the Body Speaks to the Brain. The cur­rent sit­u­a­tion is not processed sep­a­rate­ly from past ex­pe­ri­ences. Learned ex­pec­ta­tions in­flu­ence which sig­nals a per­son pays at­ten­tion to, how they in­ter­pret bod­i­ly ac­ti­va­tion, and whether they per­ceive close­ness, touch, or re­stric­tion as man­age­able.

Such a re­ac­tion does not nec­es­sar­i­ly sig­ni­fy a lack of trust in a spe­cif­ic part­ner or a per­son­al fail­ure. The ner­vous sys­tem eval­u­ates the cur­rent sit­u­a­tion also through ex­pec­ta­tions formed by past ex­pe­ri­ence. These ex­pec­ta­tions usu­al­ly do not change through a sin­gle re­as­sur­ance, but can grad­u­al­ly up­date through re­peat­ed ex­pe­ri­ences in which pre­dictabil­i­ty and re­spect are gen­uine­ly con­firmed.

Yet even re­peat­ed safe ex­pe­ri­ence does not guar­an­tee that a per­son will ex­pe­ri­ence sub­space, en­ter it eas­i­ly, or con­sid­er it de­sir­able. Some peo­ple re­main more ori­ent­ed to­ward their sur­round­ings and the con­scious man­age­ment of the sit­u­a­tion, while oth­ers im­merse them­selves more read­i­ly in bod­i­ly ex­pe­ri­ence. Both ap­proach­es can be ful­ly valid.

The depth of ab­sorp­tion is there­fore not a mea­sure of re­la­tion­ship qual­i­ty, the in­ten­si­ty of the ex­pe­ri­ence, or the ca­pac­i­ty to trust. The path­way through safe­ty is not a des­ti­na­tion that needs to be reached; it is one of sev­er­al pos­si­ble tra­jec­to­ries that de­vel­ops quick­ly for some in­di­vid­u­als, grad­u­al­ly for oth­ers, and may not take a form for oth­ers that they would la­bel as sub­space.

Conclusion

Grad­ual ab­sorp­tion sup­port­ed by safe­ty does not rep­re­sent the shut­down of the ner­vous sys­tem or the sim­ple han­dover of con­trol to an­oth­er per­son. It in­volves a po­ten­tial change in the or­ga­ni­za­tion of at­ten­tion and reg­u­la­tion, dur­ing which—thanks to a pre­dictable and re­spect­ful frame­work—a por­tion of con­scious mon­i­tor­ing can re­cede, al­low­ing bod­i­ly, emo­tion­al, and re­la­tion­al ex­pe­ri­enc­ing to gain greater sig­nif­i­cance.

This process can be sup­port­ed by trust, gen­uine in­flu­ence over the process, the sta­bil­i­ty of agree­ments, the read­abil­i­ty of the oth­er per­son, rhythm, touch, and the re­peat­ed ex­pe­ri­ence that ex­pressed bound­aries have con­se­quences. How­ev­er, it does not arise from a sin­gle bi­o­log­i­cal mech­a­nism, nor can it be re­duced to oxy­tocin, the va­gus nerve, the sup­pres­sion of a spe­cif­ic brain re­gion, or a sim­ple de­ci­sion to “stop con­trol­ling.”

Grad­ual ab­sorp­tion is not uni­ver­sal, it can­not be forced, and its depth is not a mea­sure of re­la­tion­ship or ex­pe­ri­en­tial qual­i­ty. At the same time, it can­not be re­li­ably dis­tin­guished based sole­ly on ex­ter­nal man­i­fes­ta­tions from states that arise dur­ing high in­ten­si­ty, fa­tigue, or a lim­i­ta­tion in the ca­pac­i­ty to process fur­ther in­for­ma­tion.

It is pre­cise­ly this sec­ond pos­si­ble tra­jec­to­ry that the fol­low­ing ar­ti­cle will ad­dress: the nar­row­ing of pro­cess­ing dur­ing high in­ten­si­ty, and the re­la­tion­ship be­tween sub­jec­tive­ly deep ex­pe­ri­ence, over­load, and dis­so­cia­tive process­es.
